Common Questions

Clear answers to common questions about admission, treatment, medical aid, and what to expect at Mcare Optima.

Who can be admitted to the Teenage Unit?

Teenagers who are 13 or older and attending school. A few health criteria apply, which our intake team will confirm with you before admission.

How long is the programme?

It’s a structured two-week programme. Teens are admitted on a Sunday between 10:00 and 12:00 and discharged the following Friday before 12:00.

When can we visit?

Visiting is on Thursdays from 16:00 to 17:00 and Saturdays from 14:00 to 15:00, for parents and siblings only.

Can my teen bring a phone or devices?

One cellphone may come along. Tablets, iPods, laptops and gaming devices should be left at home to help your teen focus on their programme.

How will we stay informed about our teen's progress?

The psychiatrist and psychologist arrange feedback appointments with parents during the stay, so you’re kept in the loop throughout.

What does schoolwork look like during the stay?

Schoolwork continues in a supported way. Parents can bring homework during visiting times, and each teen stays accountable for completing it.
